Juppe honors in the Savoy last French soldier killed in Afghanistan
funeral tributes were made Friday by Defense Minister Alain Juppe to the last soldier killed in Afghanistan, the 54th since 2001, which belonged to the 7th Mountain Infantry Battalion (ACB) Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Savoie.
About 500 soldiers were present to honor the first class hunter Chamarier Clement, who was killed Feb. 19 in Afghanistan.
"You demonstrate daily that the coolness, the value and valor in combat do not expect the number of years," said Alain Juppe, who presented posthumously to the soldier to 19 years with the insignia of Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur.
"You knew the specificity and magnitude of what soldiering mountain which can lead to meet death at the bend of a trail," said Minister of Defence.
Chamarier Clement was joined in November 2010 French troops deployed in Afghanistan as part of the international coalition since late 2001.
Enlisted 7th BCA in February 2009, he was killed an attack by insurgents who also made two injured, one seriously, the French side.
It was followed six months of initial training before joining the 3rd company of the 7th BCA as an AT4 anti-tank gunner, the ministry said.
