Afghanistan: A French soldier died

A noncommissioned officer of the French army who served in Afghanistan yesterday apparently died a natural death in his room, announced Today the French command based in Kabul.


"The body of a French non-commissioned officer belonging to the command of the French contingent in Afghanistan, Kabul, was found dead in her room," reads a statement in the service of communication quota. "It seems that the military has died a natural death. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death," it said.


The military was a chief warrant officer of the Land Forces Command (LFC) in Lille. This is the 55th French soldier died in Afghanistan since late 2001, when an international coalition led by the United States drove the Taliban from power. Almost all French soldiers killed in Afghanistan have been in combat.


About 4,000 French soldiers are deployed within the international coalition under NATO command, which has about 150,000 men, two-thirds American.
